Answers to the most common questions about classes, registration, policies, and what to expect at The Lasley Centre.
What about the Nutcracker?
Nutcracker is optional and is available to LCPA students Level 1 and up. Nutcracker produced by the Centre Company is by open audition and is open to all local dance students.
Dress Policies
What a dancer wears, and how he/she presents himself/herself is important. Each class has a specific uniform that the dancers are required to wear, as described below, and we ask that all students wear street clothes over their dance class attire when coming and going to and from the studio.
The dance uniform is a required discipline and also allows the teachers to easily see what each student is doing clearly, as well as how the group is moving together. All female ballet students are required to have their hair secured in a bun, with pins and hairnets, if necessary. If hair is too short for this, then barrettes, clips or hair bands may be used to keep the hair pulled away from the face. Please see your instructor for more guidance. This sometimes requires some practice. Please ask us if you need help! Jewelry is generally not permitted to be worn during classes, except for small earrings.
Coming & Going Attire
While dancewear is appropriate for the studio, it is not appropriate street wear. When entering and exiting the building, to and from dance classes and rehearsals, we ask that all students are properly dressed, covering their leotards and tights with street clothing. (We politely request that no print on the derriere is to be worn, in association with dance, by our students. Thank you.) Students should also dress for the weather, making certain that appropriately warm clothing is worn over the typically lightweight dance apparel expected for class participation.
Pre-Primary through Level 7
All class leotards, tights, and ballet flats may be purchased at the front desk. Payment is accepted in the form of cash, check, credit card, or items can be billed to student accounts.
Parents of younger students: please make sure that your dancer has the proper fitting shoes for each class they are enrolled in. It is especially important to monitor your young children, as they grow and change sizes very quickly at times. Instructors will occasionally contact you if shoe issues arise.
Boys' Ballet
Boys should discuss attire with their teacher prior to class to determine the proper items.
Boys should wear the Wear Moi Altan leotard in white, Wear Moi Hamada tights in grey, and Capezio Canvas Romeo flats in white.
Adult Ballet
Adults may wear whatever dance clothing they are comfortable in.
Contemporary
Contemporary students should wear a leotard and convertible or footless tights of their choosing.
Jazz
Students should wear a leotard, tights, and tan jazz shoes. Jazz shorts are acceptable but not required.
Hip-Hop
Students should wear loose-fitting clothing and flat-bottom sneakers such as Converse All-Stars.
Character
Students should wear the RAD Character Skirt available from RADUSA.org. Students may select any one of the four color combinations.

In Your Ballet Bag
The following is a list of essentials that every student should have in his or her dance bag at all times so as not to be caught unprepared. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their own clothing and shoes both at home and at the Centre.
- Dance shoes. A pair (left and right, please!) for each type of dance in which the student is enrolled. Shoes should be kept in good condition. Students should make sure to give their parents enough notice when shoes are wearing out or being outgrown. Parents should check on the status of students’ dance shoes from time to time.
- A clean pair of tights, free from holes or runs. Accidents happen with tights, you do not want to arrive at a rehearsal or performance without a backup pair.
- Hair equipment. This includes a hair brush, pony tail holders, spin pins (recommended), hair nets, and hair spray.
- Hygiene supplies. Hand sanitizer and deodorant can be useful in a pinch.
- Theraband
- Sewing kit, to repair shoes and ribbons as needed. Needles, thread, small scissors, and a ballpoint pen.
- Water Bottle. With water in it, preferably. Hydration is key to your energy level.
- A good book. There may be downtime at a performance, or an unexpected wait for your ride at the end of class. Don’t be stuck twiddling your thumbs.
- Street clothing. Please make sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing to and from class. For example, coats and sweatpants in winter, shorts in summer, street shoes, etc.
- A healthy snack. Instructors can tell when you’re hungry, don’t forget to eat the right things to fuel your body!
